The dailies – how did they start?                                                                                                                                                                            26/10/14 Folke
Whenever I am not able to paint for a while, starting again is a nightmare. Many artists know this problem. After returning to China from Germany, I was sitting in my studio on the 60th floor of a Shanghai high-rise overlooking the Huangpu-River and the city, being overwhelmed by the enormous possibilities. What I saw in front of me was mixing with colourful snippets from my latest travels to Germany, Scotland and New Zealand. How on earth was I to decide what to paint next?
The problem wasn’t new; it had always been solved before in an exhausting process of creative thinking. I am not a spontaneous painter, I don’t doodle, I don’t sketch, everything is created in my head before I place the first brushstroke. I wanted more spontaneity; I wanted to be able to start painting without spending hours in front of a blank canvas.
The idea: a canvas, 30x120cm landscape format; painting something that catches my eye that day, everyday, position the little painting on the canvas in relation to where I see it from my window. But it is self-contained, able to exist on its own. So bit by bit there will be a painting of Shanghai made up of many puzzle pieces. Everyday a little painting…
The dailies have worked well: I am now painting regularly, every day. Time to change the rules: whenever I am working on a bigger painting or project – no dailies, when working on them would clash with the other work. While traveling or in-between projects or when I am up for both – there will be dailies.                                              23/02/15 Folke
